What is the Difference between refinishing and restoration?

Good question, and one we hear often. The answer is pretty simple.

Refinishing is the process where the existing finish is stripped away and replaced with a new finish. This is the best process when the existing finish is damaged down to the wood beneath (i.e. deep scratches, areas chipped or worn away, areas removed by spilled chemicals or water). It is also the process to use when you want to change the color of the existing finish. Once the finish is stripped away, new color and clear coats are applied.

Restoration is the process where the existing finish is not removed, but revived using specific chemicals and polishing, or where the finish is touched up in the damaged areas. Often a protective clear coat is applied over the restored finish.

Another good way to clean dust from your furniture is to vacuum it with a soft bristle brush attachment. You avoid putting silicones on the finish as well as avoiding spreading dust particles through the air.

Furniture tip #1

When you are ready to dust your furniture, avoid products with silicones in them. Many popular brands contain silicones, which can build up on the finish, leaving it cloudy and dull.

Instead, use a tack cloth- which is a small piece of cheesecloth with a slightly sticky coating on it. You can find them at almost any hardware store. The beauty of tack cloths is that they remove dust with one swipe and trap it in the cloth itself, instead of releasing it back into the air like dry dusting can.

Protect your furniture during the holidays

As friends and family gather for the holidays, there are a few simple steps you can take to make sure there is no damage to your furniture.

First, make sure you provide plenty of coasters! Place them on every surface where someone may set a drink and encourage everyone to use them.

At your holiday table, make sure you use table pads if you have them and use trivets or towels under hot casserole dishes. Clean up any spills immediately to avoid damage to the finish.
